The College Board publishes six practice tests every year, which you can take at your leisure on the BlueBook app. You receive a score for your test, and you gain valuable test-taking experience, but there’s no feedback or instruction on how to improve that score. Unfortunately that’s not so great aesthetically. That may seem like a small thing, but when you plan on spending a minimum of 40 hours staring at these problems on your computer screen, it helps if there’s at least a little visual appeal.

Performance Dashboard

Despite the rather dull design features, PrepScholar’s performance dashboard is an extremely valuable resource. It keeps detailed track of your progress, which is a great tool to make sure you target your specific weaknesses, but also really helps with motivation.

The dashboard first gives you your overall progress in reading, math, and writing, but then breaks your progress down into micro-categories within each subject. So not only can you tell if you are falling behind in math, you can clearly see exactly what’s dragging you down.

Where the user experience of the dashboard fails is that it’s not available in app format, so you can’t easily access it on your smartphone.

On-Demand Videos

Again, the videos are informative but on the dry side. There are some graphics, but also long stretches with only a voice over text. It can feel much more like a PowerPoint presentation than a video.

That’s not to say the content isn’t helpful; it is, and for some students, the less graphics and production design the better. But other test prep companies are producing much more engaging videos.

Refund and Guarantee Policy

There’s always some fine print involved when it comes to refunds and guarantees, and you should definitely read through them all before you sign up. I’ve gone through PrepScholar’s terms and conditions myself, so here are the basics.

Score Guarantee

Unlike a lot of SAT prep courses that just guarantee some level of improvement, PrepScholar is very specific—it guarantees you’ll do 160 points better. That’s not insignificant! An increase of 160 points can mean the difference between admission and the dreaded wait list.

Of course, there’s some fine print involved.

First, the PrepScholar guarantee is capped at 1530.

So, if you scored 1400 on your first attempt at the SAT, the guarantee is not that you’ll get 1560 after using PrepScholar, the benchmark remains at 1530.

But seriously, if you’re scoring over 1530 on your SAT, you’re in the 99th percentile and could probably teach the program.

Second, to qualify for the guarantee, you must have already taken either the SAT or the PSAT before you start the PrepScholar course.

If you’ve already taken the SAT, that score is your baseline for the 160-point improvement. If you have only taken the PSAT, your baseline is your PSAT score plus 80 points.

Third, you have to complete the entire program if you want the score-improvement guarantee.

You must take every lesson PrepScholar assigns you and complete all practice tests until you’ve achieved “mastery” of a subject according to the performance dashboard or are no longer assigned problems in that subject by the algorithm.

If you choose a course with tutoring hours you must also complete all the hours you signed up for.

Finally, you must take the SAT within 60 days of completing the PrepScholar course.

If you meet all this criteria and you don’t get 1530 or a 160-point increase, you’ll get a full refund for the cost of any coursework, but not for the tutoring hours. For the tutoring hours, the guarantee offers you a redo—you get the same number of hours you already paid for free. Of course that’s only helpful if you want to take the test again.

You have one year to claim your score-improvement refund from when you first bought the course. For the dual SAT+ACT program, if you don’t see a 160-point increase, but do increase your score by four points on the ACT, you’re eligible for a 50% refund.
