Who Is Barbri Bar Review For?
Barbri works best for students who crave structure and guidance, but there’s more to it than that.
🎯Barbri is ideal for students who prefer to learn the traditional way, through lectures and conventional study techniques.
Barbri’s expert-led lectures, comprehensive outlines, structured daily assignments, and conventional study techniques give you exactly what you need without fancy gimmicks—just solid content delivered how most law students are used to learning.
🎯Barbri is perfect for first-time bar takers.
The step-by-step approach takes the guesswork out of studying, telling you exactly what to focus on each day. If you’re a recent graduate who is studying full-time, you’ll appreciate the immersive experience that covers every testable topic.
🎯Barbri also works well for the repeat test-taker who wants to identify and strengthen their weak areas.
Barbri’s adaptive technology pinpoints exactly where you struggled last time and helps you focus your efforts more effectively.
❌Who is Barbri SAT Prep NOT for?
For students on a tighter budget, Barbri’s pricing might be a stretch, especially when compared to more affordable or even free prep options out there.
If you’re someone who thrives on building your own study plan or prefers a completely self-paced approach, Barbri’s more guided structure might feel limiting.
Visual or hands-on learners may also find it challenging, since the program leans heavily on lectures and traditional study formats.
And while Barbri does offer a solid bank of practice questions, it’s not unlimited—so students looking to drill endlessly may find themselves needing to supplement with additional resources.
How Does Barbri Bar Review Work?
Barbri doesn’t just throw books at you and wish you luck—it’s a step-by-step system designed to build your skills like LEGO blocks.
You start with a diagnostic assessment, so the course knows exactly where you stand. From there, Barbi’s engine (called ISAAC, who is like your hyper-organized study buddy) helps you build your Personal Study Plan (PSP).
ISAAC tracks how you’re doing and serves up customized assignments that get harder as you improve. You’ll also work through thousands of MBE practice questions in a sequence that makes sense, gradually layering in trickier topics once you’ve nailed the basics.
The course lives in an online dashboard where you’ll track progress, access video lectures, outlines, flashcards, and more.
The structure is consistent across Barbri’s four course types—Essentials gives you just the basics, Premium adds expert bar coaching, Elite includes professional development courses, and Extended lets you spread prep over a longer timeline.
Barbri Course Options and Pricing
Barbri offers several courses, each of varying lengths, which is great because not every bar exam student is working on the same timeline. Let me break down its full lineup so you can see all your options.
Course | Features | Price |
---|---|---|
Essentials Bar Review | $1,699 | |
Premium Bar Review (Most Popular) | $2,999 | |
Elite Bar Review | $4,199 | |
Extended Bar Review | $5,999 |
Barbri has three flexible ways to pay for your bar prep:
First, you can pay in full up-front.
This gets you the lowest price and early access to course materials. It’s the most straightforward option if you’re ready to commit.
Second, there’s the Barbri Payment Plan through Affirm.
This option breaks your tuition into predictable monthly payments. Just note: you’ll need a U.S. social security number to qualify.
Lastly, the Barbri Installment Plan lets you split tuition into smaller chunks without using Affirm.
You’ll need to make a minimum down payment and commit to at least three monthly payments. Once you’ve paid at least $1,000, you can start the course.
All three options are designed to make bar prep more accessible, whether you’re planning ahead or need a bit more flexibility.
*The Barbri Extended Bar Review course spreads the content over 6 or 10 months and charges the same for either duration. Confused? Here’s how it works:
The 6-month course requires a more intensive commitment (study an average of 20–25 hours a week), while the 10-month course allows for a lighter weekly workload (study an average of 10–15 hours a week).
You can choose the option that best fits your schedule without compromising on quality. It’s built for busy professionals or international students, providing part-time study, foundational U.S. law support, and a personal 1:1 mentor throughout.
What Does Barbri Bar Review Include?
Barbri Bar Review offers a variety of learning tools, all designed to help you maximize your score come test day.
☑️Personal Study Plan (PSP)
You’ll find that Barbri’s PSP isn’t just a static calendar; it’s a tool that evolves as you progress through the course.
After each lesson, the system analyzes your performance and recalibrates your study priorities accordingly.
For example, if you ace Property questions but struggle with Evidence, your plan will shift to allocate more time to Evidence. This customization helps you study smarter, not just harder, maximizing the efficiency of your limited prep time.
The “StudySmart” feature, integrated within the PSP, helps identify the most frequently tested topics and subtopics, allowing you to prioritize your study time on high-yield material. This strategic approach can be a lifesaver when time is tight.
Many students find this adaptive approach invaluable, especially when fatigue sets in during the final weeks before the exam.
Instead of guessing what to study, you’ll have a data-driven plan telling you exactly where to focus.
Barbri’s personalized study plan
☑️Video Lectures
Barbri provides video lectures that aren’t just boring old recordings—they feature engaging experts who break down complex rules into memorable bits for easier learning. These 20-to-30-minute lectures cover every testable subject on the bar exam, from Contracts to Constitutional Law.
These videos are organized by subject area and follow a logical progression of modules that start with basic concepts and move to more complex applications, so you’re building your knowledge step by step.
These videos are interactive, so you don’t just pause and take notes (although you can if you want to).
Each pre-recorded video features one of Barbri’s law professors speaking into the camera and, periodically, the videos pause and ask you to answer quick multiple-choice or true/false questions. This forces you to engage with the content and helps with retention—so yes, you’re technically watching, but you’re also doing.
Students also have access to the transcripts for each video lesson and a note-taking feature that pauses the video automatically while you type.
Lastly, once you’re done with the video lecture, you can download the interactive questions and any notes you took during the lesson.
☑️Practice Questions and Drills
Students get access to multiple-choice questions designed to prepare them for the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE).
These practice questions start off focused on building a strong foundation in each subject area. Then, as you progress, Barbri’s Personal Study Plan (PSP) automatically introduces more advanced, mixed-subject questions that better reflect the complexity of the actual bar exam.
The PSP curates questions from a large bank of 2,500+ questions, assigning them strategically based on your study progress.
On top of that, most Barbri plans (apart from the Essentials package) give you access to the full MCQ Bank of 3,000+ questions, including real released questions from the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), so you get a realistic feel for what you’ll face on test day.
Each question comes with expert-written explanations, helping you understand not just the right answer, but why the wrong ones miss the mark.
☑️Simulated Practice Exams
Something that separates successful bar candidates from those who struggle is familiarity with test conditions. Taking a six-hour exam requires mental endurance that many students underestimate.
The Barbri Simulated MBE is a full-length practice exam designed to mimic the real Multistate Bar Exam experience.
Students get access to two 200-question simulated exams and three 100-question half exams, all integrated into the Barbri Personal Study Plan (PSP) several weeks before the actual test.
These simulations prepare students mentally and physically by exposing them to realistic question formats, pacing, and exam-day pressure.
What’s clever about Simulated MBE is its detailed score analysis, which compares your results with other Barbri students nationwide. This data powers Barbri’s Pass Predictor, which gives students percentile rankings by topic and subtopic, so they can identify weak spots and adjust their study focus accordingly.
Since Barbri has the largest pool of bar prep students, its predictor is considered highly accurate.
☑️Barbri Books & Other Materials
Call me old-fashioned, but sometimes a physical book is better than digital. Barbri offers both hard copy and digital books as part of its bar exam prep materials.
These books include detailed outlines, practice questions, and exam strategies tailored to different jurisdictions.
They also provide flashcards—like Critical Pass or AdaptiBar cards—which condense legal rules, definitions, and elements into an organized, easy-to-memorize format to reinforce key bar exam topics.
The mainstay of these materials is The Conviser Mini Review, a condensed book containing all testable subjects, one that many students consider their bar prep bible. It strikes the perfect balance between comprehensiveness and digestibility. You can also get a copy on Amazon here: Barbri: The Conviser Mini Review
Hard copy books are included in higher-tier plans like the Elite and Extended plans, while digital books are more widely available, including with the Premium plan.
You can typically order hard copy books starting in September for the February bar and February for the July bar, with an email notification when it’s time to order.
Students enrolled in Barbri Guided Pass or Ultimate Pass Guarantee programs can request new hard copy materials for a $250 refundable book deposit plus shipping, depending on whether a new edition is available.
Otherwise, students can reuse their old books or rely on the digital bookshelf in their Personal Study Plan.
Pro tip: Use the printed materials for your final review phase. Having condensed, portable versions of key concepts helps a lot during those last few days before the exam.
☑️Essay feedback
Barbri’s bar review prep uses what they call a Directed Essay Grading method designed to build strong, efficient essay-writing habits.
The process follows a three-phased strategy:
- Students use the Essay Architect, an online tool that teaches how to read essay prompts, structure responses, and get instant feedback.
- Students self-grade their practice essays by comparing their answers to model responses or score sheets—an approach Barbri says is closely tied to bar exam success.
- When ready, students submit essays for expert feedback, gaining personalized insight into how to improve.
Premium, Elite, and Extended plan students get unlimited graded essays, while Essentials tier users receive four. Graders focus heavily on the analysis section—connecting legal rules to facts is important, even if the law isn’t stated perfectly.
☑️Mobile App
The Barbri app supports every stage of your legal education, including bar exam prep, by offering a mobile-optimized, tech-driven experience.
The app lets you set up and view your PSP. You can watch downloadable video lectures, complete assignments, and reinforce important concepts with tools like the Mini Review for last-minute bar exam cramming and Early Start modules to build foundational bar skills ahead of your main study period.
It also makes it easy to switch between multiple Barbri courses if you’re enrolled in more than one.
The app blends learning science, expert-taught content, and innovative tech to help students retain information more effectively. For instance, if you need to switch between modules, you don’t need to switch between multiple random tabs, which is hectic. You can just use the included sidebar to track your progress within each module, take notes and access advanced features.
Whether you’re reviewing video lectures or taking quizzes on the go, the Barbri app makes sure you’re not tied to a desk and can prep anytime, anywhere—all from one streamlined, user-friendly platform.
It’s available for download on both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
☑️Coaching and Mentoring
Barbri offers personalized 1:1 coaching and mentorship as part of its bar prep and legal education support.
For students enrolled in Barbri Bar Review, private coaching is available in all states and tailored to each student’s needs—whether you’re taking the bar for the first time, repeating it, or tackling a second state.
Tutors are bar exam experts who help improve essay writing, MBE, and performance test techniques while also reinforcing legal knowledge and keeping students on track like a personal trainer.
The number of sessions recommended depends on your focus—ranging from 5 to 15 sessions.
Barbri also provides Bluebook Evaluation, an advanced coaching tool designed to give students detailed, personalized feedback on their written bar exam work.
Unlike standard essay grading, this evaluation dives into every part of your submitted essays and performance tests.
An experienced Barbri tutor spends over two hours reviewing your answers before the session, analyzing important components like issue spotting, the accuracy of your legal rule statements, the depth and clarity of your legal analysis, and how effectively you organize your writing using IRAC (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion).
This is followed by a one-hour personalized coaching session—either in person or by phone—where the tutor walks you through your strengths and weaknesses and gives actionable advice on how to improve.
Lastly, Barbri’s mentorship program supports students and alumni by pairing them with experienced professionals. This program focuses on career development and confidence-building, prioritizing students from underrepresented backgrounds. Mentors commit to at least one hour monthly for four months.
Digital Platform and User Experience
Let’s talk about where you’ll be spending most of your study time—Barbri’s online platform. After all, even the best content loses value if it’s difficult to access or navigate.
Barbri has invested significantly in creating an intuitive digital experience. The dashboard gives you a clear overview of your progress, upcoming assignments, and recommended study tasks. Navigation is straightforward, allowing you to easily jump between lectures, practice questions, and study materials.
The mobile optimization deserves special mention—you can access most features on your phone or tablet, making it possible to squeeze in study time during commutes or lunch breaks.
The platform also tracks your progress across devices, so you can seamlessly switch between your laptop and mobile without losing your place.
Some users have reported occasional technical glitches, particularly during high-traffic periods close to exam dates. However, Barbri’s technical support is generally responsive and helps resolve issues quickly.
One particularly useful feature is the ability to adjust video playback speed; you can speed through familiar concepts or slow down for challenging topics. This flexibility helps personalize the learning experience and optimize your study time.
Supplemental Resources
Beyond the core curriculum, Barbri offers several supplemental resources that can give you an extra edge in your preparation.
➡️You also get access to West Academic, an online publisher owned by Barbri, with thousands of legal education materials.
West Academic offers a wide range of resources for law students, faculty, and legal professionals, including casebooks, textbooks, study aids, and interactive multiple-choice practice questions to help you prepare for exams, and audiobooks and audio lectures so you can listen on the go.
West Academic’s “AdaptiBar” technology provides explanations for every question and tracks your performance in every subject and subtopic to accurately predict your score.
➡️ AdaptiBar MCQ Simulator
This bar exam prep tool uses licensed MBE questions and a patented adaptive algorithm to help students practice and improve their multiple-choice skills. It provides detailed explanations for each question, tracks performance, and offers real-time insights, allowing students to focus on their weaknesses and optimize their studying. It is included in both Elite and Extended plans.
➡️Barbri offers a FREE MPRE course.
The MPRE (Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam) is required for admission to the bar. You can take it either before or after passing the bar, but it’s an essential step in the process of becoming a lawyer.
➡️Critical Pass Flashcards
They come with free shipping and instant digital access for six months, making them a great option for both tactile and on-the-go learners.
➡️Barbri offers professional development workshops to help you advance your career.
Additional workshops on specific subjects focus on aspects of a legal or business career that aren’t covered by the BAR prep course. Topics include continuing legal education, financial management, communication, DEI, interpersonal skills, and more.
➡️Barbri offers bar exam tutoring separately from its bar review course.
While there’s no option to combine the two, Barbri does offer a separate tutoring package. It’s $350 for a single session, which is among the most expensive I’ve seen. You can save $250 on five sessions if you sign up for all of them at once. This package costs $1,500.
Barbri takes a detour from standard exam prep by not making tutoring available in its prep course packaging. I can’t imagine this serves any purpose besides making full-service exam prep extremely expensive.
Content Access Period
How long you can access Barbri’s materials depends on which package you choose. This is especially important if you’re planning an extended study timeline.
➡️The Essentials Bar Review provides access for 8–10 weeks (about 2–2.5 months), designed for full-time intensive study right before the exam.
➡️The Premium Bar Review gives you four months of access, so roughly twice as long as the Essentials plan. This extended time allows for a more gradual approach and extra flexibility.
➡️The Elite plan gives you access starting four months prior to your bar exam date. This means you’ll have the full four months leading up to your exam.
➡️For those needing more flexibility, the Extended Bar Review offers either 6- or 10-month access options. This is great for working professionals who plan to spread their studying over a longer period or for students who want to start reviewing key concepts well before intensive bar prep begins.
There’s also no contractual commitment; you can cancel any time before receiving materials or online access to the bar review course has been provided, whichever comes first. (Excepting the nonrefundable deposit for Extended Bar Review—see below.)
Once your access expires, you’ll no longer be able to view the online materials or use the interactive features. While you keep the physical books indefinitely, losing access to practice questions and videos can be a significant drawback if you need to extend your study period.
Barbri’s General Refund Policy
Before investing in any bar prep course, you should understand the refund policy—especially given Barbri’s premium pricing.
Barbri allows you to cancel your enrollment within five business days for a full refund—minus any promotional gift cards—if you haven’t received physical materials or online access.
After five days, you can still cancel and receive a refund (excluding the nonrefundable registration fee and gift card value), as long as you haven’t received any course materials or access.
🚨For self-paying individuals enrolling in Essentials, Premium, or Elite plans, there is a $25 nonrefundable registration fee.
🚨The Extended Bar Review program includes a $295 nonrefundable initial tuition payment. This means if you need to cancel the program before you start for any reason, you’re out $295.
They claim this fee covers administrative costs and locks in your spot in the program. That said, it doesn’t always sit well with students—especially given how pricey bar prep already is. So, if you’re not 100% certain you’ll commit, this might feel like a pretty steep gamble just to secure access.
Once you’ve accessed the online platform or received physical items, your enrollment is nonrefundable. All cancellations must be submitted in writing to [email protected] before the deadlines.
It’s worth noting that Barbri does not offer a score-improvement or pass guarantee in the traditional sense.
What it offers is a Bar Review Guarantee for students who don’t pass or don’t sit for the bar exam after enrolling in a traditional course.
This guarantee allows you to retake the same state’s Barbri course online for the next exam without paying extra tuition. However, it doesn’t cover any initial gifts or supplements. There are three types of guarantees:
- Self Pass: one retake if 87% of the course was completed
- Guided Pass: one retake with no completion requirement
- Ultimate Pass: unlimited retakes plus up to $500 in repeat taker exam fee reimbursement
Always read the fine print before enrolling; refund policies may change and specific terms can vary by jurisdiction and course type. If you have concerns about potential conflicts with your schedule, discuss them with a Barbri representative before signing up.
Final Verdict: Is Barbri Worth It?
After weighing all factors, is Barbri worth the substantial investment? The answer depends on your specific needs, learning style, and budget.
The quality of Barbri’s materials is consistently high. The lectures are engaging, the practice questions are representative of the actual exam, and the outlines are clear and well-organized.
While the premium price tag can be a hurdle and the cancellation policies aren’t super consumer-friendly, students who have the time to fully engage with the program should find that Barbri provides excellent value.
Take the first step toward joining the ranks of over one million successful attorneys who trusted Barbri to guide them through the bar exam wilderness and into the promised land of their legal careers.
